Planet Comicon Kansas City: Panels & Geek Swag!

This year for Planet Comicon Kansas City, I’m taking a bit of a different approach. Usually I spend most of my time at cons walking the show floor, checking out all the many goodies and catching up with friends. That’s all well and good, of course, but I usually wind up kicking myself after because I missed out on great panel discussions. With this year’s Planet celebrity lineup, I’m not making that mistake!

This week I sat down with the show program to choose my show itinerary – so many great panels overlap in one way or another, I had to make some tough decisions. Read on to find out where you can find me – and why you definitely want to!

Add Some Geek Flair to your Trivia Team Name!

Some friends and I are putting together a team for the Ultimate Geek Trivia Showdown at Planet Comicon on the 27th. As part of our planning, we had to come up with a team name. Given that it’s a geek trivia event, we did some research and brainstorming on geek trivia team names. I thought I’d share our brainstorming results with you, in case you’ll also be there, or if you’re just headed to a Geeks Who Drink or other trivia night, and want some geeky ideas.

How Big is Your Platform?

One feature I’ve come to enjoy about KC Geeks is featuring podcasters – they’re all so passionate about their topic, whether it be traditionally “geeky” or not. We’re all geeks about something. Take Shane Purnell, for example. He loves helping people define and expand their brand and visibility platform. I met him when he spoke at a WordPress KC meetup, and the guy knows his stuff. Read on to find out what he thinks is essential to carving out your platform.

Watch Out: Prodigy is Coming [Director Q&A]

The Kansas City FilmFest, an annual juried film festival featuring more than 100 local, regional, national and international films is now in its 20th year. More than $200,000 in cash and prizes have been awarded since 1997.

Recently, Alex Haughey (pronounced “Hoy”), a filmmaker in LA, contacted me to let me know about his Kansas City roots, and that he will have a film screening at the FilmFest – “a Science Fiction thriller with a Twilight Zone-esque edge.” He offered to let me screen the movie before the festival. Not one to pass up an opportunity like that, I jumped at the chance, and slipped in a few interview questions along the way. Wait till you hear about his big senior film project back at Blue Valley North high school!
