I recently received an email about the upcoming Plaza PopCon, a one-day pop culture event at the Plaza branch of the Kansas City Public Library. You can be sure I followed up for more details!
What is your name and what is your role with the Kansas City Library?
I’m Diana Platt, Community Engagement Librarian at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library.
The Library recently announced the first-ever Plaza PopCon. How would you describe that event?
This is a free event with activities suitable for adults, teens, and children – and everyone in between!
What was the inspiration to put this together?
I had a lot of inspiration from other library Cons around the country (The Springfield-Greene Public Library has a long running, noted one), but I myself love Cons and letting my inner fangirl out. So I had two goals: One, to make the Con experience available to our patrons – not all of which have the resources to attend a typical Con. And two, to invite in people who may not come to the library often, so we can tell them about our cool resources while they’re here having fun.
What is the focus of the event?
Pop Culture, Literature, and Art!
What can people expect at the Plaza PopCon?
We are so excited to have some great artists and authors at this event. Some will be giving away one-of-a-kind art specifically designed for the event!
There will be board game and video game rooms if you want to try out a new activity or our VR rig. The kids activites are shaping up to be amazing, with face painting and a superhero training camp.
It’s also Free Comic Book Day – we’ve partnered with Clint’s Comics to have comics available throughout the library for our attendees.
And, we’re particularly proud of our escape room, based in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them universe! Groups will be able to sign up for a time slot and discover Newt Scamander’s secret creature stash… You’ve never seen anything like it in a library!
What panels are planned?
- 1pm: Fandom Activism with the KC Keepers chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance
- 2pm: Lightsaber Dueling with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival
- 3pm: What Are You Working on Next? Author/Creator panel
- 4pm: Costume Contest and Door Prizes!
What part of the Con are you personally most excited about?
I am excited to see some of the amazing inventive costumes I know our Kansas City community will produce! And I love that so many wonderful Kansas City-based comics creators and authors are participating – I just can’t wait to share it all with everyone.
What future plans lay ahead for other pop culture events?
Hopefully we’ll make this an annual event, but for now if you are interested in pop culture you should definitely check out our Off-The-Wall film series, held every summer on the roof of the Central Library! This year’s includes an eccentric playlist of comedies with song-centric storylines – kicking off with School of Rock on May 18th.

What’s something you love about Kansas City?
I love so much about this city – I still get a little thrill when I see the downtown skyline. I really love this city’s art and culture scene – you could see a fantastic live show, lecture, or concert every night (some are even here at the library)!
Anything else you’d like to share?
Be sure you RSVP if you think you might come to PopCon – so we can make sure we have enough of our signature PopCon PopCorn!
EDITOR’S NOTE: I will be there with an information table for KC Geeks – come get your KC Geeks swag and talk nerdy to me!
