In some previous posts, I have offered ideas for Top 5 Geek Dates in Kansas City, as well as recaps of events like LEGOLAND Adult Night. But what if your budget is tight, and you still want to get your geek on? This post is for you! Below are five ideas for FREE things to do in Kansas City, all with a geeky slant.
Free Geek Dates in Kansas City
Linda Hall Library
The Linda Hall Library is the world’s foremost independent research library devoted to science, engineering, and technology, and it’s right here in Kansas City! They regularly host lecture events on very geeky topics, such as terraforming Mars, interstellar travel, storm chasing, and cybersecurity. The majority of their events are free and open to the public, though RSVPs are often required. After the lecture, you can head out for a drink and discuss what you’ve learned!
Many of the comic book and gaming stores in Kansas City host regular gaming nights, whether specific game-based, or open Board Game Nights. And usually these events are no charge, like at Mission: Board Games, GameCafe and TableTop Game & Hobby. Just pop in and choose your game! A little friendly competition can be healthy for couples! Or team up against another couple and strengthen your alliance in victory!
Fort-ify Your Union
Who says forts are just for kids? Gather some blankets, sheets, chairs, and sofa cushions and create the most epic fort ever, right in your living room! You can have an indoor picnic in your fort, play with LEGOs, or queue up your favorite shows. Perhaps the season 2 episode of “Community,” “Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design“?
Are you a couple of coffee geeks? The Roasterie in Kansas City offers weekly “cuppings” (coffee tastings) every Thursday from 5-6pm at their Plant Cafe. Sample coffees from all over the world! Their staff will guide you through the samples and answer any questions. You can also do a factory tour for just $5.
If you’re more of a bier meister, Boulevard Brewery offers free tours on Wednesdays. The 45-minute walking tour concludes with samples in their Tasting Room. (Side note: Did you know there’s a Kansas City Bier Meisters Homebrew club?)
If your tastes are more “spirited,” Lifted Spirits distillery offers free tours Wednesdays-Sundays at 5pm. Learn about the history, tradition, and science of distilling great spirits. No reservation required – just ask at the bar if you’re there for a tour.
For those foodies out there, Williams Sonoma offers free cooking technique sessions. Try out new recipes in a lovely home-cooked meal!
