Visit any sci-fi/fantasy/anime/fandom con(vention), and you’re likely to see plenty of folks decked out in elaborate costumes. Many of them spend countless hours working on the fine details of clothing, accessories, props, headgear, and makeup, striving to make the costume as realistic to the character’s as possible. Dressing up in costume as a specific character from a movie, TV show, book, comic, or game, and often interacting in character, is known as “cosplay,” which is short for costume-play.
There are thousands in the Kansas City cosplay community, and many of them are members of the KC Cosplay & Photography group, founded by Ali Smith. Read on to learn more about them!

How would you describe your group?
This group is a hub for Kansas City and surrounding area cosplayers, photographers, and crafters. The group features active discussions, event coordination, and all around camaraderie. Whether you are interested in building costumes, doing charity work, or just hanging out in costume… All are welcome.
When was the group founded?
What made you want to found the group?
I founded the group with the goal of creating a common area for people to discuss cosplay, photography, and crafting. A place for us to learn from one another and excel in the personal goals we have set for ourselves. Why not have fun doing it? Also love having a place to organize all the events in the area and help out the community and charities.
How big is the group?
As of right now there are 1349 members. Everyone is welcome to join.
How often do you meet?
We don’t meet regularly. It’s more of an online community that we organize with to go to and do events together. We learn off of one another.
Where do you meet?
at events in the surrounding KC area
What do you do at meetings/events?
We either plan on a costume theme for said event. [At] events we just hang around and take pictures with fans and event goers.
What do you love about the group?
I love the community aspect of the group. We learn and grow off one another and have become one big family.
What future plans lay ahead for the group?
Right now we have several events and cons we are attending. Stealth Con, Empower ComicCon, Little Apple Comic Con, Planet Comicon, Lebanon Comic Con, Smallville ComicCon, several Elite Comics‘ events. We also do movie premieres and charity events around the community.
