I know my way around Photoshop Elements, creating 99% of the graphics for my personal website projects, and quite a few digital scrapbooking projects, but I am by no means a designer. I have worked with designers in previous jobs, and they are true masters at their craft. I watch them fly through various actions and tasks in Photoshop, and find myself mesmerized. If you’re looking for Kansas City graphic designer resources, including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and other visually-oriented products – you need to check out KCDesignCore. Read on to find out about their copious Adobe swag, and annual photo walk!
What is the name of your group?
What is your name and what is your role in the group?
Buck Sommerkamp, Group Manager
How would you describe your Kansas City graphic designer resource group?
We’re designers, developers, digital photographers, freelancers, producers, in-house corporate marketing types, and interested students of all ages — focusing mostly on visually-oriented products in the entire Adobe Creative Suite and Creative Cloud, with a strong emphasis on Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and other tools with a visual emphasis. NO program is off-limits, though…if it’s visual, we’ll talk about it!
When was the group founded?
Our group was founded in 2007 as one of four official Adobe groups in Kansas City.
How long have you been a member?
I became manager in 2011.
How big is the group?
692 online members through Meetup; usually an in-person crowd of 25-50 at Centriq each month.
How often, and where do you meet?
Once a month in person at Centriq Training, 8700 State Line; sometimes more online.
What do you do at meetings?
Adobe provides us with great presentations, speakers, and prizes. If you’re a regular participant in our group, you’re very likely to take home some fantastic goodies. Twice a year, we are authorized to give away an entire year’s subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud — basically “everything Adobe puts out for creatives” on a membership basis. Additionally, throughout the year we have books, t-shirts, software, and evaluation items for our members…these giveaways are based on your attendance and participation.
What makes this Kansas City graphic designer resource group unique?
We have the “ear” of Adobe, so when we ask for a speaker, a topic, or good swag – they listen and respond to us! It’s the best way to meet your fellow designers and creatives, and learn ways to be more efficient with Adobe tools.
Tell us about a particularly memorable moment in the group.
Every year we do a “photo walk” in the month of June, where we take our digital cameras and descend upon a non-profit organization. In 2015, our photo walk took us to the Harris-Kearney House in Westport, where we were given free reign to shoot anything inside this historic home. A small group of re-enactors came to join us, complete with (live) baby and fancy clothes – it was a wonderful touch!
What future plans lay ahead for the group?
We will continue to be on the cutting edge of what’s new with Adobe. We want to increase our membership base and find a local sponsor!
